Top 10 of 2013: Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2014

You can find links to the other blogs taking part in this event at Fiktshun.

I just wish that all of these had covers, but never mind!

Cress by Marissa Meyer is the third in her Lunar Chronicles series, after Cinder and Scarlet. I devoured the first two titles so I want to know what happens next and how on Earth, Ms Meyer is going to incorporate the Rapunzel story into her world. Will Cress have amazingly long hair or will it be a metaphor?

Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen is the latest offering from one of my favorite authors, who inspired this whole blogging adventure with her Garden Spells. Although I do not think that she has quite managed to match the quality of that first title in her later works, but I still want to read anything she writes.

The Thorn of Emberlain by Scott Lynch is the next installment in one of my all time favorite series: Gentleman Bastards. Oh, Scott Lynch, how much did I LOVE your earlier titles: The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Sea Under Red Skies and The Republic of Thieves? Opening The Republic of Thieves and starting to read it was like slipping into a lovely warm bath in your most favorite bathroom in the whole world . . .

Title To Be Announced by Jan DeLima is the second in the Celtic Wolves series after Celtic Moon. Going beyond the total coolness of actually following this title from birth to publication as I watch Jan toil away at her keyboard, I want to know what she has in store for her characters and how she will handle the romance between Luc and Rosa.

Steles of the Sky by Elizabeth Bear is the third in her Eternal Sky series. Although I have only read the first title, Range of Ghosts, I have had The Shattered Pillars on my coffee table for quite some time. If only I had not decided to try to fulfill my quota for the Women in Genre Fiction Reading Challenge I would have polished it off already. Ms Bear grabbed my attention with her short story Tideline and continues to impress me with her creativity and by the fact that she is Scott Lynch’s girlfriend!

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor continues the series that began with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. As with Eternal Sky series, I have had the second title, Days of Blood and Starlight, on my coffee table all year long. I solemnly swear that I will read it in 2014.

Shadows of Self by Brandon Sanderson is the fifth title in his Mistborn series, being the second of a trilogy of sequels to the original three titles: Mistborn, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages. Following on from The Alloy of Law, this title is guaranteed to be an excellent read and a interesting expansion of the Mistborn universe.

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson is the second title in The Stormlight Archive. I am about to begin reading the first title, The Way of Kings as part of a Read Along that will finish just in time for us to start Book 2. I have read quite a few of Mr Sanderson’s titles and enjoyed all of them, so I am looking forward to starting this epic Fantasy series.

These last two titles are written by two of my favorite authors in the Roman Crime genre and will be reviewed over at Veni, Vidi, Legi when I can get to them.

Enemies At Home by Lindsey Davis is the second title to feature her new detective Flavia Albia. I have yet to read the first entry in the series, The Ides of April, but I LOVE her Marcus Didius Falco series, so I will finish that before moving on to this new series, which features Falco’s daughter.

Raiders of the Nile by Steven Saylor continues the story of the young Gordianus that began in The Seven Wonders. Gordianus is the protagonist of Mr Saylor’s Sub Rosa series, so I will be intrigued to know more about this amazing character.

Top 10 of 2013: Best Book Boyfriends of 2013

You can find links to the other blogs taking part in this event at Fiktshun.

Today’s topic is not a particularly great one for me because I read so little that could even vaguely be classified as Romance. Also, the rules stipulated that this list could only include books published in 2013, which reduced my choices even further because I mostly read books a year or two old. I am left with a grand total of two choices, but they both appear in the same book, so I hope that they both still count!

The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch is the third in his wonderful Gentleman Bastard series. This was one of my top reads for the year and you can find the links to the Read Along posts here. The two main characters of the series are Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen. Although they are almost complete opposites from one another they are both extremely engaging characters and I can hardly wait to read the fourth title in their adventures.

Throughout the first two titles, The Lies of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies, we are faced with a love-sick Locke who can never find a replacement to the red-headed love of his life: the absent Sabetha. Finally, in The Republic of Thieves, we meet this woman, who has managed to completely captivate one of my favorite characters of all time. Many of us were wary approaching the book because if Mr Scott had fluffed Sabetha we would have been totally disappointed, but she is revealed to be the perfect woman for Locke. We get to see both their initial excruciating courtship as teenagers and their reunion after several years apart. Both story lines were handled beautifully and showed that Locke could be the most thoughtful and yet annoyingly stupid boyfriend of all time.

If the people doing the Read Alongs are any indication of the general female population, then it is actually Jean Tannen who would win the title of Best Boyfriend EVER. At first glance he appears to be the brawn to Locke’s brains, but he is an avid reader and, therefore, very knowledgeable about all kinds of strange subjects. He has a particular liking for Romance titles, but we will draw a veil over that . . . In Red Seas Under Red Skies, we saw him lose his heart and prove that he could be as ‘enthusiastic’ as the next man, even though he is normally shy about approaching women. Unfortunately, the relationship did not end well and his heartbreak was dreadful to read. In The Republic of Thieves we see him lose his virginity to a good woman, which earned a rousing cheer from those of us who carry a rather large literary torch for him. Jean is almost perfect in every way: strong, with nice big shoulders; well-read and educated; good in a fight, but gentle as well; not afraid to show his more feminine side and emotionally intelligent.

Top 10 of 2013: Best Debuts of 2013

You can find links to the other blogs taking part in this event at Fiktshun.

For today’s post we had a selection of topics to choose from, so I selected Debuts. Here are my favorites, in no particular order:

Cinder and Scarlet by Marissa Meyer are the first two titles in her Lunar Chronicles Series. These reinterpretations of classic fairytales are massively inventive and enjoyable. Again, they are billed as YA, but do not feel anything other than excellent Sci-Fi / Fantasy titles.

Celtic Moon by Jan DeLima was my most anticipated title of 2013 because I Jan is a dear friend of mine. It is a refreshing take on the Paranormal Romance genre with a wonderful heroine, full of courage and strength. It is set in Maine, but draws upon the werewolf traditions of Ancient Wales.

A Lady Awakened by Cecilia Grant was a NYOBG choice after being recommended by Jan. It was delightfully smutty and kept me giggling for quite some time. Fortunately, the character work and plot are engaging and so it does not simply depend upon the sex scenes to keep the reader interested. This Romance title was surprisingly good, and I say that as a person who normally avoids the genre.

The Whitefire Crossing by Courtney Schaffer begins her The Shattered Sigil series with an unusually earthy title that is very much dependent on landscape and how the characters move through it. Presenting a variety of unusual magic systems, it is almost more interested in studying the characters at its center and following their evolving relationship than in hurrying through a convoluted plot. I look forward to continuing the series next year.
