A Challenge of Ice and Fire

Last year I set out to read George R.R. Martin's mighty 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series . . . and got part way into Book 2: A Clash of Kings before I got distracted by some sparkly lights or some other nonsense. Now that HBO has released its BluRays of Season 1 of 'A Game of Thrones', as it is calling the series, and Season 2 has arrived with its promise of bigger dragons, scary dire wolves and more blood-splat-gore-horror, I have determined that I will complete my quest to read the whole series. After some careful counting I think I will be able to do this by reading about 125 pages per week, which I should be able to fit around my other commitments and activities.

In order to keep me focussed upon my quest I will torment you by posting weekly updates: thanks for the support, guys! Plus, if I falter along the way I hope that at least one of you will give me a verbal kick up the backside to get me restarted: I might need it! :D

For more details check out my new Page and if you want to join me on this epic journey this week I will be reading up to p. 138 (the end of Catelyn III) in my edition of 'A Game of Thrones' and will publish my thoughts in a post next Sunday.

Winter is Coming!

  1. I've only made it to the end of the second book, although I've been meaning to read the third one for a while now.

  3. OMG, this is so funny, because I've been trying for the last hour to donate A Clash Of Kings to the Red Nook Team (NYOBG book group Nooks) My Ipad always crashes in B&N website. Anyway, I read the first book, loved it, but with two major issues: I hated how the whole back history of John Snow (sp?) was left up in the air. I mean, we were led to believe that the King and Stark's sister might possibly be his parents, but then Stark got his head cut off and we were left with no answers!!! And with no resolution for the "bastard Stark son"! Secondly, and this is a big one for me, Arya's wolf? What happened to it? I had a hard time with the killing of Lady and the disappearance of the wolf. But then this author did cripple a young boy, and still the wolf thing really bothers me. I know, I have issues.

Anyway, I am going to start the next book! We will discuss! :o)

  4. There is an excellent discussion about Jon's parentage here, which does present a compelling argument: http://www.angelfire.com/ma4/mlarchives/faq/jon.html

In A Clash of Kings there are rumours of a giant wolf leading a pack of wolves in the area that Arya travels through. Plus Arya has some interesting wolf-based dreams, so I don't think we have heard the last of Nymeria. I agree about Lady: just another reason why I want to stab Joffrey and Cersei in the eyes with pointy things! :D

  5.  I might.  It mostly depends on how busy I am with the grad school work, lol.  :D

  7. The first episode of season two was watched by a whopping 3.9 million viewers! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/game-thrones-season-2-premiere-ratings-307303

It makes the New York Times look a bit dumb! :D
